Depression doesn’t always look like sadness. For high-functioning people it often looks like going through the motions — showing up, delivering, achieving, and feeling almost nothing underneath. The color drains out. The things that used to matter feel like obligations. At Being Counseling in Houston, you work directly with Jagdeep Chadha, LPC, on the depression that hides behind a functioning life. One clinician. Unhurried sessions. Depth and skill, not a rushed 45-minute slot.
What depression actually is
Depression isn’t just low mood — it’s a flattening. Energy, motivation, pleasure, and hope all lose their charge. The inner voice turns harsh and certain: nothing will change, this is just how you are, why bother. Repeated enough, those thoughts stop feeling like symptoms and start feeling like the truth. They aren’t. They’re depression talking.
You can be successful and depressed at the same time. High achievement is often the mask, not the evidence against it.
How I treat depression
I integrate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) — strongly evidence-based for depression — with behavioral activation, psychodynamic depth, and Eastern contemplative practice. CBT targets the distorted thinking that keeps the loop turning; behavioral activation rebuilds momentum when everything feels pointless; the deeper work asks what the depression is protecting you from feeling. My core principle runs through all of it: you cannot control your thoughts, but you can train your inner voice.
That’s the work — not forcing positivity, but loosening the grip of a self-critical voice that has convinced you it’s just being realistic.
Who I work with
I work with high-functioning professionals in Houston who are quietly running on empty — still performing, but hollowed out. The midlife reckoning. The success that didn’t deliver. The numbness that no one around you can see. If you look fine and feel far from it, that’s exactly the work I do.
When it’s more than a rough patch
Everyone has low weeks. Depression is when the low doesn’t lift — when weeks of flat mood, poor sleep, lost interest, and self-critical thinking start shaping your life. That’s not something to white-knuckle through. It responds to treatment, and the sooner we start, the shorter the road. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) — help is available right now.

Common questions about depression therapy
Does therapy actually help depression? Yes. CBT and behavioral activation have strong evidence bases for depression, and the skills you build keep working after we finish.
Do I need medication? Many people improve with therapy alone. If medication makes sense, I coordinate with a prescriber — the decision is yours, made with good information.
I’m still functioning — is it really depression? High-functioning depression is real and common. You don’t have to fall apart to deserve help.
Do you take insurance? Being Counseling is a concierge, cash-pay practice, which is what makes the unhurried, senior-level format possible. Insurance-based therapy is available separately through Headway.
